“We came out flat,” senior guard Braden Geraldo said about Seaholm Men’s varsity basketball’s disappointing 62-37 district semifinal loss to Southfield Lathrup last Wednesday, March 9.
“We let them dominate play early, and were unable to dig ourselves out of the deficit we created.” Geraldo said.
Seaholm went into the game with high hopes, coming off a two game winning streak that included a blowout win at home on senior night.
“Our confidence was at a season high going into the game after our performances from the previous two games,” said senior center Michael Putz, “I think the confidence from our past couple games caused us to overlook Lathrup.”
Lathrup came out firing against the Maples, taking an early 15-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Seaholm struggled with turnover problems early allowing Lathrup to get easy baskets in their fast break offense.
“We played sloppy offensively,” senior co-captain Bradley White said. “We just allowed them to get to many easy buckets.”
Southfield lead at half, 32-21.
Lathrup picked up where they left off in the second half and continued to put it on Seaholm, outscoring the Maples by 14 points in the second half.
Seaholm’s poor shooting was another crucial factor in the loss, going 12-52 from the field.
Shawn Conway led the team in scoring with 16 points and 12 rebounds, recording a double-double.
“The team wasn’t as successful as I would have hoped, but no matter the score we always played hard,” Geraldo said.
