The Varsity baseball team continued its winning ways with an 11-3 victory in their home opener over the North Farmington Raiders on April 13.
Both offenses started a bit sluggish, with the teams combining for only two hits through the first two innings.Junior shortstop Michael Doney scored the game’s first run off of a fielder’s choice groundball to shortstop hit by sophomore first baseman Max Cormier.
Junior Steven Palmeri broke the game open with a two run single in the bottom of the third inning to give the Maples a 3-0 lead. The inning ended with Seaholm leading 5-0.
Junior pitcher John Glazier pitched a solid five innings with three strikeouts and gave up three runs with only two earned.
“It’s nice to know when I come out and don’t have my best stuff,” Glazier said. “I have a defense that will make plays for me and get me out of a jam.”
Palmeri pitched a stellar sixth inning, only using seven pitches to get out of the inning and preserve the 6-3 lead.
“Got out there, first time on the mound, just tried to keep my composure and tried to deliver for the team and I think I did that,” Palmeri said.
The Maple bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth inning. A six run outburst extended the lead to 11-3. The inning was highlighted with a two RBI triple by senior second baseman Derrick Amboyan.
“I pretended I was Mark McGwire,” Amboyan said.
Amboyan finished the day 2-2 with two triples, two walks, and three RBI.
Coach Dan Drapal was happy with how his team played in the home opener.
“It was a good team effort,” Drapal said. “We went out on top, they came back but we responded well.”
The Maples were scheduled to play local rival Brother Rice on Monday, April 18 but due to an unexpected snow storm, the game was postponed. The make-up date for the matchup has yet to be announced.
