With the flowers blooming and the snow a thing of the past, the Seaholm Girl’s Varsity Softball team is breaking the ice with their first practices for the upcoming season. With their season opener on April 14 against North Farmington the team is anxious to get the season rolling.
“I’m really excited about this upcoming season,” said senior catcher Heather Stoner. “It’s my first year on the varsity team, so I want to prove myself.”
This season the team has been moved up to Division I from Division II last season.
After posting a 13-17 record last year and losing graduated seniors Teresa Patterson, Ellie Gaudino, and Allison Squatrito the team looks to let the depth of this team excel them forward.
“Hopefully we will be able to prove we belong here,” said senior outfielder Alexandra Reed. “We are going to give it our all to insure that.”
Inexperience may be a factor for the maples.
“We have a fairly young team,” said junior captain and pitcher Kelly Buttice. “But there is a lot of talent and potential for us.”
The team’s toughest competition this season will be against Lake Orion and Clarkston. The past years, each of the teams have dominated the Division.
“Both teams are very competitive,” said Buttice. “But also very beatable.”
Buttice is one of the three team captains this year along with seniors Paige Young and Alex Yaw.
The team had a scrimmage on Wednesday, March 24 against Rochester Adams, however no score was kept
“Considering it was the first time we stepped on the field, we did well as a team,” said senior Alex Reed. “Before the season started we hadn’t really practiced together.”
With the season already on its way, many people are anticipating on how well the team is going to perform this season.
“There are many good underclassmen to support our team,” said senior outfielder Mckenzie Hess. “I’m expecting a good season.”
