Devoted, to give up or appropriate to or concentrate on a particular pursuit, occupation, purpose, or cause. Athletes devote themselves to all sports, some from when they are young and some that are just being discovered.

As an early child holds a basketball for the first time and hurls the ball towards the net hoping one day, he can score a basket.

With age it became hoping to be able to dunk, with that accomplished, senior Richaud Pack eyes a state title, now a Maple but soon to be Panther, the final season of a basketball legend at Seaholm is about to begin.

It is hard to understand the pure talent that Pack possesses, what you get with a 1000 point and league champion, is a drive to climb the ladder, like he did from the day he picked up the basketball, once seen as just good, is now seen as a gifted young athlete with a bright future in basketball, past the pure talent, Pack is seen as a leader on the court averaging 20+ points a game and assisting the starting five.

The state championship is a very possible task to achieve, with names of Pack, Ellis, Quigley, and Stevens, the Maps has become a force to be reckoned with.

From the court to the mat though, other maple names stand out, Burnie, Kerstetter, Cortright, and Franceschelli, the maples will be hard hitting on the mat. All around the weight classes this team may just pin and win their way far, although they have lost Mike Steltenkamp, seniors this year had the opportunity to see his leadership and build off of it.

Commitment of cutting weight and practicing daily, this team is determined and willing to do nearly anything for the team.

Matt McCarthy shares words with Pack and Franceschelli like commitments, pure talent, but he also possesses more than that, the heart and love of the game of hockey.

Although we Michiganders are unfortunate to have true pond hockey available, McCarthy still laces up and gives it his all at the rink for the BU hockey team. A veteran to the varsity and captain, not to be confused with the “captain”, but the captain of BU .

Being a leader can lead the team to glory or also drag the team to its lowest point in years. For instance, Michael Vick, as soon as he committed a crime, the team crumbled under its captain, and has never been the same. This is a lack of dedication and heart.

Captains must dedicate themselves for the team to do positively, and not just captains, but every single person and athlete that is a part of a program, it’s a well oiled machine, even when most feel as if they don’t contribute, a engine without gas is useless and a car with no wheels will go nowhere, all athletes are part of the team, we dedicate ourselves to the sports we love, we don’t do it for others, we do it for ourselves.
