Seaholm girl’s swim team currently has 13 athletes qualified to swim at states. They are 7-0 with a positive outlook looking forward.

The swim team plans to continue their new found streak of beating their long term rival, Groves High School. Last year, the girls celebrated all the way through the season, ending with a league championship. Their goal for this year is a repeat. The next meet is leagues on November 5 through 7 at Groves High School.

“If we have the right mind set, we can win states,” said junior Alex Stephens.

The team’s success has been paved by Lauren Nichols, Chelsea Abbott, Charlotte Yaw and Sam Arnold. Lauren Nichols, senior captain, is trying to beat Seaholm’s 50 meter freestyle record and the 100 meter freestyle state record for division two. Her current times are 23.7 seconds in the 50 meter freestyle and 52.5 seconds in the 100 meter freestyle.

“We had confidence that we were going to be a good team this year,” said senior captain Anna Koseck.

“The team is very tight knit and we always love each other,” said senior captain Molly LaFave.

“It’s a love hate relationship when it comes to swimming,” said senior Ellen VonFoerster. “We love practice sometimes, like when we get to do starts or go to the cider mill, but we hate it when we have a tough set.”

Karl Hodgson, the team’s coach, is very dedicated to the success of the swim team. He pushes the team to work hard and to take every race seriously.

“Seaholm swimming has a tradition of excellence. We have a strong swim community and a lot of girls and parents who are very dedicated,” said athletic director Aaron Frank. “When you combine that with our great coaches, it makes the combination for success.”

Swim team members want to expand their community. The team is looking for school support.

“We are 7-0 and football is 1-7, yet no one comes to the swim meets but everyone flocks to the football games,” said junior Sam Krawczak.
