Both the English and Social Studies departments will lose crucial contributors this coming spring. English teacher Jane LaBond and Flex teacher Stacey Olsen will both be on maternity leave for the required six weeks.
“I have to take at least six weeks off because it’s major surgery,” LaBond said. Both teachers will be leaving school during the month of April.
“I anticipate that I will be gone as of spring break,” LaBond said. “I would prefer not to come back [this year], but it depends on our contract which is as of now, not settled.”
Olsen has a different approach to the matter, she plans on staying in school as long as she can and returning after her maternity leave is up.
“I will work as long as I physically can,” she said.
In their absence both LaBond and Olsen believe that their students will not fall behind on the required material.
“I trust that we’ll get a sub that can do the job just as well,” LaBond said. “I don’t think that anyone would fall behind or anything like that.”
LaBond’s English students have expressed mixed feelings of her leaving.
“Class probably won’t be as much fun but I’m sure the sub will get us the information,” sophomore Erin Neuenfeldt said.
Olsen joined the team of Flex teachers this year so her leaving will affect more people.
“She’s more fun and more active than all the other teachers,” sophomore Alexa Bowman said. “She actually likes to help [the students] so I think that flex will be affected.”
Olsen will also make sure that her students are not negatively affected by her absence.
“Well of course, it’s hard to duplicate the awesomeness that is me,” Olsen said. “However, I will only hire a sub of the highest quality to replace me for the six weeks that I’m gone.”
