Senior Maria Banou and junior Rachel Gallagher had a problem. As presidents of their respective French and Spanish Clubs, they noticed the demands of homework, school and extra-curriculars were thinning their rosters. So, they decided to combine their clubs, into one “International” Club.
“We both had really enthusiastic members and there was just a lot more to do if we merged our clubs,” Banou said.
With both French and Spanish represented, there was just one thing missing.
“Last year students and teachers felt that we needed to bring all of the languages, including Chinese, and their respective cultures together,” said senior Chinese representative Aaron Walden. “As a result, the International Club was formed.”
Gallagher shared her excitement about the merge.
“Why not widen our horizons and explore all the languages and countries offered at Seaholm and beyond that,” said Gallagher.
This year they hope to incorporate some of last year’s activities.
“We met with the Spanish club, we had a spring celebration last year,” said Banou.
“International Club plans on doing plenty of stuff such as after school field trips and meetings celebrating holidays the non-American way,” said Gallagher.
“We plan on having activities where we go down to museums or restaurants together and eat food of a certain culture,” said Banou.
The club plans on meeting immediately after school every other Thursday in Joy Wang’s room, F103. At their last meeting, 24 people came, but Banou, Gallagher and Walden hope to further expand their club.
“Everyone is welcomed to join, you don’t have to be in a language class or anything like that,” said Banou.
“Anyone who is interested in joining the club should come to our next meeting or contact one of the Co-Presidents of the club. In addition, you may post any questions or comments about the club, on our Facebook group's page, ‘Seaholm's International Club,’ said Walden.
